“Heavy books lighten the mind.”
-Robert Grassi
My father taught me much through life in the quotes he would often repeat to me.
Nearly every time I have had to move my library or rearrange it, this quote of his comes to mind.
A brief internet search did not result in showing me anyone else using this quote, but as we know, the one who said “of making many books there is no end” also said “there is nothing new under the sun.” In any case, it’s my privilege to attribute the quote to my dad.
I pray that whether you are involved in summer reading or a semester’s curricula or anything else involving the printed page, that your mind is being lightened even as you carry around these heavy friends of ours. And choose wisely the books you read to make sure that your mind is in fact receiving light and not darkness.
(And may I gently remind you that listening to a book is listening to a book, and reading a book is reading a book. Listening is not reading.)
Happy page turning!

Our church is known as the Commonwealth Community Baptist Church of the Bronx. Sometimes people will refer to our church simply as “Commonwealth.”
As everyone in our church knows, this past Christmas season we completed a detailed study of I Timothy 3:16.
