Church Field Trip to View Ancient Hebrew Manuscripts 2025 (part three)

Our church field trip to view Ancient Hebrew Manuscripts afforded us an opportunity to view a wide variety of rare documents.

It also provided some historical context to our studies in the form of unique books.

Many of these ancient manuscripts are commentaries, prayer books, and historical documents which contain quotes and citations of the Bible.

The Siddur Tzarfat (JTS MS 8259) is a 14th Century French Prayer Book.

The scribes who produced manuscripts like this demonstrated their skills and abilities with their ornate designs.

In this particular manuscript, a second scribe is said to have added the marginal notes a century later to make use of the wide margins since parchment was so rare.

We are reminded of the words of our Lord Jesus Christ and His first use of the word “scribes”:

“For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:20 KJV).
